The Vincent P. Gurucharri Foundation was created in 2006 to provide financial assistance to cancer patients who are faced with financial stress which often occurs during treatment.
Dr. Vincent P. Gurucharri was a well-known surgeon who practiced general and thoracic surgery in Boone County from 1980-2003. He displayed a passion for the pursuit of medical knowledge that was exceeded only by his compassion for others – compassion that included the medical, spiritual, and financial needs of patients. He lived with the vision that “people help people” and he would often assist his own patients when he knew they were having particularly difficult times.
The Foundation is a non-profit organization that provides financial assistance to eligible Missouri residents being treated for cancer. Assistance from the Foundation often keeps utilities from being turned off, required medications from being skipped, cars from being repossessed and evictions for home. These are just a few examples of the requests received from social workers.
To be eligible, a patient receiving treatment must be a Missouri resident receiving treatment in one of the designated area hospitals/clinics location in one of the following counties: Audrain, Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Moniteau or Randolph. The social worker in that hospital/clinic will evaluate that patient’s financial status and make a referral to the Foundation. Upon review and approval by the Foundation, that patient may receive up to $750 per year in assistance.
The funding for the Foundation comes from donations, memorials, COMO Gives & our various fundraisers, many of which can be seen throughout this website. Over 95% of donations go directly to pay the patient’s financial need assuring that the Foundation is able to assist as many patients as possible.
Over the years the Foundation has worked hard to preserve Dr. Gurucharri’s vision of “People Help People.” The board wishes to maintain his legacy into the future.
Since 2006 the Foundation has provided over $1 million in assistance to over 2,100 Missouri residents.
